Get Hired Faster With a Job Search Log - Workology

Get Hired Faster With a Job Search Log - Workology What Is A Job Search Log? Looking for a job can feel like screaming into a windstorm while getting pelted by debris. Youre sending out applications and not hearing back. When you do hear back, its good, but not good enough. Meanwhile, people around you are getting lucrative new gigs or finally finding their dream jobs. Its not that youre literally shooting off emails from your phone with one hand, while hanging onto a lamppost, trying not to get pulled away by a tornado with the other. Thats just how it feels. What makes looking for a job so terrible isnt just the process or the time spent, its the anxiety that builds and builds, the longer youre unemployed or on the hunt. Of course there are real, serious concerns (like getting paid) that fuel job search anxiety, but a lot of it is due to how we tend to job hunt: haphazardly and emotionally. One week were feeling energetic so we send off 10 resumes. The week after were feeling burnt out and send out none. The week after that we send out one resume and wonder what happened to those 10 applications we submitted earlier in the month. The week after, still sweating about those apps, we shoot off an email checking in with the hiring manager of the job we really want. Hi Denise, I just wanted to check if you saw my last email and received my materials. Im still interested. Please read my resume if you havent already. Hire me, h i r e  m e, HIRE ME. That adds up to a job search cycle that ramps up your anxiety while also being ineffective. While developing a job search system that works for you may sound like too much, it will significantly reduce your workload in the long run, increase your chances of being noticed by hiring managers, and help to manage the anxiety that goes along with looking for a job. One easy way to begin organizing is to start using a job search log to keep track of your efforts. What Is A Job Search Log? A job search log is exactly what it sounds like: a tracking sheet for your job hunt. In most regions, these are standard issue for people receiving government unemployments benefits job seekers are expected to document what kinds of jobs theyre looking for, who theyre reaching out to, how often theyre sending out resumes, and when and how theyre following up with hiring managers.  If youve ever collected unemployment, these sheets will probably be familiar to you. But theyre not just useful to bureaucrats looking to ensure youre staying on track; theyre an essential tool for any job seeker. There are many job search log templates available for you to download, including one from Google Docs, and they all include a few essential elements. In order to get the most out of a job search log, you need to track your job search contacts, what type of jobs youre applying (especially if youre applying for more than one, for example, Editor and Social Media Manager, or Cashier Supervisor and Shift Leader), and the dates of any communication you have with hiring managers and recruiters. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Type of Job:  Keeping track of job titles and types may sound annoying at first, but if your job search continues for several months, it will soon become essential information. In an extended job search its worth doing an audit of your log to see what kinds of jobs youre getting the most bites for and what kinds of jobs youre most interested in. Are you applying for jobs even when your heart isnt in it? Are you applying for jobs youre not yet qualified for? Company:  Basic information like what companies youre applying for is of course important to keep track of. Getting a call from a hiring manager and not recognizing the employer they work for is incredibly embarrassing for both of you. (Trust me, this used to happen to me at least once a week when I was a retail recruiter.) But its also important to keep track of in the long run. Some employers will search their archives for previous contact with you and compare your current application to an older one. Inconsistencies in your resume or cover letter may raise a red flag, even if they arent because of anything suspicious. Its also important to keep track of who youve had contact with and where. Contact:  Keeping track of your job search contacts is important. But its also a good idea to leave notes for yourself about the contact. Was it a positive interaction? Negative? Did phone interviews go better than in person? When youre looking back on your job search so far these will help you to see patterns, whats working for you and whats not, and give you clarity on whether or not youre truly interested in pursuing a career with their organization. Date of Submission and  Followup: Whats a log without dates?  Keeping track of dates will help you be consistent in sending up a followup email and help you to get a feel for which jobs may not be worth further pursuing. If you find a hiring manager is taking weeks at each step, it may be time to move on to another opportunity. Source of Lead:  Where did you find or hear about the job? An employer job site? Indeed? Or through word of mouth? Keeping track of this detail will help you figure out what sources are producing the most useful leads. This is especially important when someone in your network told you to apply for the job not only may they be a potential reference if they know someone at the company, but its only polite to thank them after youve been hired. 3 Job Search Log Templates This  Google Docs  template has all the fields that most job searchers will need, and can of course be customized to add more, should your field have very specific requirements. This  Excel template is a bit simpler than the one built by Google Docs, but still has the most important fields for you set up: who, what, and when. If you want a much simpler template this one from  CareerChoice Guide  may be right for you. It leaves off a number of the fields youll find in the GDocs template, concentrating on the most important information. If none of these templates meet your needs, its easy enough to build your own. Keep track of all the important basic details on your log but ensure that youve left reminders to yourself to followup and keep things personal. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} Job search logs can help you keep track of the most important dates in the application process, give you data on how effective your job hunt tactics have been so far, and most importantly, they can help you control your job search anxiety by giving you a better sense of control and knowledge over the process. But like any resolution or self-improvement plan, dont get over ambitious. Focus on recording the most essential details at first and add more information as needed.

How to Stay motivated at work

How to Stay motivated at work by Aaron Obeng Need a pick-me-up for your position?  Let’s face it, even the most motivated amongst us can be guilty of complacency in our jobs (see also: boredom). But if you feel like you’re stuck in a rut, there might be more you can do than simply ignore it and hope it goes away â€" or, worse, make a rash decision that could end up adversely affecting your career. To help you get your head back in the game, here are five tips on how to stay motivated at work:Look back at your successes Don’t have an ego yet? Now’s your chance… Maybe you hit more targets than any other consultant in your region after six months in the role, or perhaps you were pivotal in the development of a new system that generated additional revenue for the business. Note it down, feel proud and shout about it. (N.B not necessarily literally) If you don’t, it’s easy to forget how far you’ve actually come whether it’s with regards to your expanding skill set, conquering a personal dem on (e.g. public speaking), or how your role has made an impact to the wider business.   And don’t just limit it to professional successes. Don’t forget about the time you managed to earn enough money to buy something you really wanted, go on holiday, start a family, or even start saving up for your dream car. Ferrari on standby… Ask for more autonomyYou might not be demotivated â€" you might just be unfulfilled. So, instead of feeling like you’ve ‘mastered’ your role to perfection (also, probably not true), use this as an opportunity to ask for more responsibility from your managers. It doesn’t even necessarily need to be a promotion. It could just be a little more autonomy, or the chance to lead a new project or initiative. Not only will it allow you to feel more challenged and valued around the business, it’ll also give more variety to your day-to-day.And as long as you have the facts and strengths to back it up, there’s really nothing stopping you from applying for the next position in line, if it’s a step-up you’re looking for.Remember: if you don’t ask, you won’t get.Find a new crowdIt’s fairly natural that during your time at work, you might find yourself sticking to a particular social group. But instead of playing it safe, why not widen your scope and try establishing new social circles around the office? Internal forums are a good way of connecting with co-workers that share common interests (check that your internal comms platform is an acceptable medium to talk about extra-curricular activities within your company). Maybe your interests lie in poetry, or volunteering and charity work. Or maybe you just want a new post-work pub partner (#ThirstyThursdays). Perhaps you’re an introvert and growing your network goes against all you believe in. Well I can assure you that establishing newer relationships is only likely to make your time at work a little bit more enjoyable. Change up your routineAre you a serial schedule pl anner? Well maybe it’s time for a changeFor ease of comfort and familiarity, we often end up doing the same things over and over. The problem with this approach is, routines quickly end up becoming more like chores.Stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to a change in ideas, and overall outlook on your working situations. Typical examples such as taking a different route to work, or ‘hot-desking’ throughout the week, are all ways for us to get a different perspective and shift our thinking. After all, as Albert Einstein once said, insanity is ‘repeating the same things over and over and expecting different results’. And that guy knew what he was talking about, right?Actually take time offYou know what, sometimes we all just need a break (and/or a KitKat). For those of you who work extremely hard or for long hours, it may simply be that your ‘all work, no play’ attitude has tired you out so much that the constant cups of coffee no longer cut it.Annual leave, or ev en a  sabbatical, are good ways of recharging the batteries and keeping a clear head for a few weeks to prevent demotivation. But even if that isn’t an option at your company, just getting away from your desk for a few minutes every couple of hours could make all the difference. Whether it’s having meetings outside (weather permitting), or just getting up and going for a quick walk around the workplace. So, no more staying too late. And no more working through lunch. It’s time to step away from the desk…What is a sabbatical?Honourable mentions: Reward yourself for doing a good job, break big tasks up, write a to-do list, just actually try being a little more positive (no, seriously).Still searching for your perfect position?
